"Aprons"

A friend shared this email with me today.  How great to add to my blog!  Thanks Keisha C!

"Aprons" (truly a sweet story)
Remember making an apron in Home Ec?
Read below:

The History of  'APRONS'

I don't think our kids   know what an apron is.

The principal use of Grandma's apron was to protect the dress   underneath, because she only had a few,it was easier to wash aprons than dresses and they used less material, but along with that, it served as a potholder for  removing  hot pans from the oven.

It was wonderful for drying children's tears, and on occasion was even used for cleaning out dirty ears
From the chicken coop, the apron was used for carrying eggs, fussy chicks, and sometimes half-hatched eggs to be finished in the warming oven.

When company came, those aprons were ideal hiding places for shy kids.

And when the weather was cold grandma wrapped it around her arms.

Those big old aprons wiped many a perspiring brow, bent over the hot wood stove.
Chips and kindling wood were brought into the kitchen in that apron.
From the garden, it carried all sorts of vegetables.

After the peas had been shelled, it carried out the hulls.
In the fall, the apron was used to bring in apples that had fallen from the trees.

When unexpected company drove up the road, it was surprising how much furniture that old apron could dust in a matter of seconds.

When dinner was ready, Grandma walked out onto the porch, waved her apron, and the menfolks knew it was time to come in from the fields to dinner.

It will be a long time before someone invents something that will replace that 'old-time apron' that served so many purposes.

Send this to those who would know (and love) the story about Grandma's aprons.

REMEMBER:
Grandma used to set her hot baked apple pies on the window sill to cool.  Her granddaughters set theirs on the window sill  to thaw.
They would go crazy now trying to figure out how many germs were on that apron.

I don't think I ever caught anything from an apron.

Remember this Fabric

This fabric has now become the apron below!  Made this for a friend.  Makes me think of the black and white pictures with one colored area.  I do hope Laura enjoys it and has fun cooking!

Thanksgiving

Well I do hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving with their families.  I sure did enjoy mine with my family.  I took the whole week off from work and was home with my children and spent time with family.  I never touched the sewing machine the whole week!  Now back in my routine this new week and I am finishing up a child's apron for a friend's son.  Its turning out real cute and I'll be sure and post a pic before I give that to her.  Its Toy Story!  Buzz Lightyear and Woody to the Rescue!  Is everyone ready for Christmas?  24 days from today....

Child's Apron - Size 7/8

I've been working on this apron here.  Its the same fabric as an adult half apron that I have pictured below.  Brought it to work and the ladies were so glad to model for me!  Thanks to my friends!  I think it turned out pretty cute and my pattern that made this also makes the adult version as well.  Thought the half apron here is from a different pattern all together.  Could be a mother and daughter set!

Here are some images on my blue dress.  Its for a size 3 child.  I haven't accomplished buttons yet, so you will see in these images - VELCRO works like magic!  I even share the pattern that I was given that helped make this dress.  Very simple pattern.

My full black and white apron trimmed in green....

The Machine that makes the magic happen! Ha!

Here is my machine.  Its a Singer.  Thats about all I know about it.  My mom is searching for the book she has for it so I can learn more about it.  She bought herself one of those embroidery sewing machines a while back and didn't have the need for this one anymore.  Now it has a new home.  Thanks Mom!  I'm loving it.

First Entry

My name is Cristie.  I'm from Louisiana, 32 years old, married for 12 years and together we have two boys.  I am new to sewing.  The past few weeks I have been sewing and making aprons.  I thought I would start simple and straightforward.  I'm enjoying this.  I did sew an apron one time back in high school so many years ago.  I guess there was a spark lit in me at that time and I've always had the desire - but never started...until my mom gave me a sewing machine a few weeks ago and I made something!  A few friends here at work have encouraged me as well - bringing me patterns and fabrics to play with.  I do work full time as well...so I do have to sew late in the evening (after the kids are asleep) or on weekends.  I'm finding I really like this new hobby.  I'm sharing this blog so I can keep up with my sewing and see how far I can come along...I think I'm getting better each time already.  I plan to post pics of my aprons recently made and new projects as well.  I hope you enjoy my blog and I encourage someone as well to pick up and start a new hobby.
